You are the key. Unlock Mysteries with The Pythia’s Tarot

The Pythia’s Tarot Namesake & Origin Story

The Pythia, or Oracle of Delphi, was the high priestess at Apollo’s temple and one of the most powerful women of the ancient world.

Known also as the Pythoness, a title honoring Apollo’s victory over the serpent Python, this deck features a snake motif in tribute.

Chosen for her strength of character, the Pythia was typically a woman over 50. If married with a family, she would live separately at the temple, dressed as a maiden. As Apollo’s priestess, seer, and prophetess, she held an extraordinary position of authority.

Her prophecies were revered by kings, emperors, and rulers alike, for they were considered the very words of Apollo, carrying the gift—and the curse—of prophecy.

A Note from the Artist

Working on this project, I set out to honor The Fool’s journey in my own way. I didn’t want to make a deck unless I felt I could do it right, and add something to this sacred tradition.

This deck’s framework comes from the legacy and deep symbolism of the tarot - but you’ll quickly notice deviations from traditional decks. I decided to give myself permission to go back to explore interpreting those roots using the language of Greek myth to express those powerful archetypes.

I also wanted to use this project to give faces to more under represented people in mysticism. I changed the heteronormative and gendered language to reflect the world more authentically in how we experience it today. With that, I created something that resonated with me.

(and hopefully you, too.)
